What is Wires Cut?
Wires Cut Linux is a Live CD tool for software development in disconnected, interrupted, and low-bandwidth (DIL) environments. It is a custom version of Xubuntu with built-in support for databases, web servers, and several programming languages.
Where one is cut off from downloads and updates, we've provided built-in packages. Even if there is a fast Internet connection available, one can still enjoy not having to install and configure dozens of developer tools. We've done it so you don't have to—your time is better spent creating new products.
Some of the packages directly contributing to offline development are: AlwaysOnline, allowing Firefox to load pages from HTTP servers running on localhost; SQLite Database Browser, a quick way to edit SQLite tables; YelloSync, a non-NNTP clock synchronizer; and a full Ruby installation, complete with RubyGems and Rails.

What does it look like?
It looks like awesome.
What does it come with?
Most everything Xubuntu 9.04 comes with plus: several programming languages and development tools, including GCC, Java, Haskell, Lua, newLISP, and Ruby on Rails.
How do I get it?
Download the ISO. Use a recording program to burn it to a CD. Insert the disc and reboot.
What about Macs?
Several of the Wires Cut packages are specific to Mac computers. The configuration has been edited to better service MacBook and other laptop users according to Ubuntu Community Documentation.
Touchpad gestures:
- Two-finger vertical scroll
- Two-finger horizontal scroll
- Two finger + mouse button right click
- Three finger + mouse button middle click
Wireless support is excellent. Odds are, Wires Cut Linux (or any Ubuntu 8.10-based Linux) immediately recognizes your card and begins searching for Wi-Fi networks.
What's the default password?
All passwords, including login, MySQL, and the password keychain, are "wirescut".
Oddities
Some bugs left to squish:
When files are dragged and dropped on the desktop, they are copied instead of moved. To move them, hold Shift while dragging and dropping. This is caused by the file manager, Thunar.
Audio quality is sub-par, though there are ways to fix this.
Configuration
