<p>
It's finally here folks! A semester in the making, <a href="index.php?id=96">Wires Cut</a> is now available. Originally code named SPECTRE, this project has coincided with the Ubuntu Jaunty release, the end of George Mason University's spring 2009 semester, and the start of a highly productive summer. Enjoy!
</p>
<p>
<a href="index.php?id=96"><img border="0" src="images/screens/wirescut-desktop.png" width="400" /></a>
</p>
<h2>What is it?</h2>
<p>
The Internet is only a few decades old, but it is hard to imagine using a computer without it. Building software requires incredible amounts of online resources, from programming libraries to icon galleries, troubleshooting guides, language documentation, and of course hosts for publishing the final product. Not everyone has the luxury of a fast, always on network. Wires Cut Linux is a killer platform for developing software without the Net.
</p>
<p>
Even if you do have a reasonable Internet connection, Wires Cut saves time. It has GCC, Java, Haskell, Lua, newLISP, Perl, Python, and Ruby on Rails built-in. Want to try out one of them without installing Linux? Pop the Live CD into your computer and restart. When it turns back on, you will enjoy a fully functional development environment.
</p>
<h2>Minimalist</h2>
<p>
Based on Xubuntu, Wires Cut is small. It can run in Live CD environments (no install required), full installation on a 3GB hard drive, and inside a virtual machine. You don't need heavy graphics support or memory support. Wires Cut only needs 256 MB of RAM.
</p>
<p>
Package selection keeps Wires Cut small. Instead of Gedit, we offer Mousepad and vim. Instead of Gnome or KDE, we use XFCE. Instead of Oracle, we use MySQL and SQLite. You get the idea.
</p>
<h2>Made for Macs</h2>
<p>
Wires Cut was made on a MacBook v2.1. The keyboard, touchpad, and wireless card work as you would expect on a normal Mac OS X computer. Scrolling and clicking gestures are built-in. Of course, other laptops may also benefit from these gestures. We just went the extra mile for Mac users.
</p>
<h2>YelloSoft Technology</h2>
<p>
It's our puppy and we're going to brag. We use some YelloSoft products to make Wires Cut that much more capable. <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8502">Always Online</a> helps Firefox load pages from a localhost server. <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8548">VersionX</a> allows the installation of any add-on, regardless of the official version compatibilities. A prototype of <a href="http://yellosoft.svn.beanstalkapp.com/apps/yellosync.rb">YelloSync</a> is located in /usr/bin for assistance with networks that block NTP. There is also a set of Perl-Python-Ruby scripts to login to Juniper networks. <a href="index.php?id=104">Gilgamesh</a> had to get in there somehow.
</p>
<h2>Custom Fit</h2>
<p>
Linux distributions are meant to be customized. If you find that Wires Cut lacks something, add it on. Feel free to publish your own version. Just make sure to link to <a href="index.php?id=96">Wires Cut</a> on your page. There aren't any good reasons to keep this to ourselves, so we're sharing it with you for however you want to use it.
</p>
<h2>Acknowledgements</h2>
<p>
We would like to thank the Ubuntu community, the Xubuntu team, and amateur developers everywhere. You don't have to be a master programmer to help out. A simple bugfix is enough to make the difference.
